The 5 Biggest Fraction Mistakes Children Make (and How to Fix Them)

"From adding across the numerator and denominator to confusing equivalent fractions, these are the most common fraction errors and exactly how to correct them."

Even after a fraction unit is "taught," children make the same predictable errors on tests. Rather than treating these as signs of low ability, we should recognize them as diagnostics pointing to specific gaps in conceptual understanding.

Mistake 1: Adding the Numerators AND Denominators

The most common error: a child sees 1/3 + 1/4 and writes 2/7. This happens because they apply the addition operation to both numbers in the fraction, treating it like two separate whole-number addition facts. Fix: use a physical fraction bar or numberline to show WHY the denominators must be equal before adding can happen.

Mistake 2: Thinking Larger Denominator = Larger Fraction

Children compare 1/8 and 1/3, believe 1/8 is larger because 8 > 3, and move on. Fix: bake a pizza. Cut one into 3 slices, the other into 8. Take one slice from each. The physical reality is undeniable.

Errors are Diagnostic, Not Damning

Every fraction error your child makes is a precise signal pointing to a specific conceptual gap. A great teacher treats these errors as starting points, not failures.

Mistake 3: Cancelling Incorrectly

When simplifying, children sometimes cancel across addition rather than only within multiplication: (4+6)/8 erroneously becomes 4/8 by "cancelling" the 6. This stems from a rule-following mentality without understanding. Our Fraction Mastery Program ensures every cancellation rule is derived from visual understanding, making incorrect application nearly impossible.
