Preventing the Summer Math Slide

"Studies show children lose up to two months of math skills over summer break. Here is a low-stress plan to keep their skills sharp."

The "Summer Slide" is a heavily researched educational phenomenon where students forget significant portions of what they learned during the school year over the long summer break. Math skills are particularly susceptible to this decay because, unlike reading, children rarely practice formal math spontaneously outside of school.

Consistency Beats Intensity

The goal of summer math is not to teach them next year's curriculum; the goal is simply to maintain the neural pathways they already built. To achieve this, consistency is vastly more important than intensity. 15 minutes of math practice three times a week is infinitely more effective than cramming for 3 hours the week before school starts.

Incorporate Math into Summer Travel

Taking a road trip? Your children are now your navigators and quartermasters.

  • "We are traveling 300 miles. We have gone 120 miles. How many miles are left?"
  • "We have a budget of $50 for lunch. Can you calculate what we can order from this menu?"
  • Have them calculate estimated times of arrival based on current speed.
Leverage High-Quality Gamification

Summer is the perfect time to utilize educational apps. Set a rule: before they can play Roblox or Minecraft, they must complete 20 minutes of their math app. Because programs like Matheics are heavily gamified, it feels less like "summer school" and more like casual gaming.

Read Math-Themed Books

Combine reading and math by going to the library and finding math-centric literature. Books like "The Number Devil," "Sir Cumference and the First Round Table," or "Math Curse" weave complex mathematical concepts into highly engaging fictional narratives.
