The Kindergarten Math Readiness Checklist
"Ensure your 5-year-old has the fundamental number sense required to hit the ground running in their first year of school."
Many parents focus intensely on teaching their preschooler the alphabet, but overlook early foundational math. Kindergarten math moves quickly, and entering without basic "number sense" can set a child back immediately.
What is Number Sense?
Number sense is the fluid, intuitive understanding of numbers and their relationships. It means a child knows that "4" isn't just a squiggly shape they memorized; it represents exactly four physical objects, it is larger than 3, and smaller than 5.
Core Skills Checklist
- ✦Rote Counting: Can they verbally count from 1 to 20 without skipping numbers?
- ✦One-to-One Correspondence: This is critical. If you put 7 blocks on the table, can they point to each block individually while saying the numbers 1 through 7? (Many kids count faster than they point, missing the connection).
- ✦Subitizing: This is the ability to instantly recognize a small quantity without counting. If you roll a dice and cover it up after one second, can they yell "Five!" without having to point at the dots?
- ✦Basic Geometry: Can they identify a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle, regardless of the shape's size or color?
Math is the science of patterns. Give your child a bowl of mixed buttons or Lego bricks. Ask them to sort them by color, then mix them up and sort them by size. Recognizing and creating patterns (Red, Blue, Red, Blue...) is the precursor to algebraic thinking.
Daily Practice
You don't need flashcards. Count stairs as you walk up them. Count the number of red cars you see on the drive to the grocery store. Ask them to bring you "exactly three" napkins for the dinner table. Natural integration is best.
