Why Math Anxiety Happens
Mathematics is one of the few subjects where answers are often strictly right or wrong. This binary outcome can create a high-pressure environment for children who are naturally afraid of making mistakes. When a child experiences math anxiety, their brain's working memory is compromised, making it literally harder for them to compute.
Step 1: Check Your Own Bias
Research shows that parents' math anxiety can be transferred to their children. Avoid saying things like "I was never good at math." Instead, model a growth mindset by saying, "This looks challenging, let's figure it out together."
Step 2: Focus on the Process
When reviewing homework, don't just look for correct answers. Ask your child to explain their thinking. Praise the effort and the strategy used, rather than just the final result. If they get something wrong, respond with curiosity instead of correction: "How did you arrive at that number?"
Step 3: Make Math Tangible
Anxiety often stems from the abstract nature of numbers. Bring math back to the physical world using manipulatives. Use lego bricks for fractions, or coins for addition. Once a child can see and touch the math, it becomes much less intimidating.
