Summer Slide Prevention

Fun activities to keep math skills sharp during the holidays.

The 2-Month Gap

Research indicates that students can lose up to two months of mathematical equivalent learning over the summer break. However, keeping math skills sharp doesn't mean chaining your child to a desk with worksheets in July. Summer learning should be sneaky and fun.

Kitchen Mathematics

Cooking is applied fractions and measurement. Bake cookies together and ask your child to halve or double the recipe. "If the recipe calls for 3/4 cup of flour, and we want to make double, how much do we need?"

Grocery Store Estimates

Give your child a budget (e.g., $10) and ask them to pick out the ingredients for a fruit salad while staying under budget. They have to estimate weights, calculate prices, and perform mental addition.

Road Trip Mileage

If you're taking a family trip, have your child act as the navigator. Ask them to calculate how far you've traveled, estimate arrival times based on speed, or figure out the gas mileage.
